The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, on Thursday received the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, at the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park and Mausoleum in Accra, to pay homage to Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Prime Minister Modi, who is in Ghana for a two-day official visit at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, was accompanied by Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, and other senior government officials.
Welcoming the Indian Prime Minister, Mayor Allotey described the visit as historic and a profound gesture of respect for Ghana’s independence struggle, a reaffirmation of the enduring friendship between the two nations and a testament to the shared values of freedom, solidarity, and development that both countries uphold.

He noted that the Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park remained a powerful symbol of the country’s journey to self-determination.
The Prime Minister was later led to the bronze statue of Dr. Nkrumah, mounted at the same spot where he famously stood to declare Ghana’s independence from British colonial rule on March 6, 1957, and proceeded to the catafalque at the centre of the park, where the remains of Dr. Nkrumah and his wife, Madam Fathia Nkrumah, are interred, after which he laid a wreath in honour of the late President and observed a minute’s silence as a mark of respect.
