Ghana and South Korea Sign Key Agreements on Maritime Security, Climate Action, and Digital Technology

John Dramani Mahama has held high-level bilateral talks with Lee Jae Myung, reaffirming the long-standing partnership between Ghana and South Korea and opening new avenues for cooperation in security, climate action, and digital innovation.

The meeting concluded with the signing of three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) covering maritime security, climate change cooperation, and digital technology, signaling a significant step in strengthening collaboration between the two nations.

President Mahama emphasized the historic ties and shared democratic values that underpin relations between Ghana and Korea. He noted that both countries share strong commitments to democracy, human rights, and international cooperation, which have enabled them to work closely together in global institutions such as the United Nations.

According to the Ghanaian leader, the two countries frequently support similar positions on global issues at the United Nations and other multilateral platforms, reflecting their aligned approach to international governance and development.

Focus on Agriculture and Food Security

President Mahama also highlighted growing cooperation in agriculture and agribusiness, particularly initiatives supported by the Korea International Cooperation Agency. These programs aim to increase rice production and strengthen Ghana’s food security, while promoting modern agricultural techniques and sustainable farming.

Leveraging AfCFTA for Trade Expansion

During the talks, the President pointed to the strategic role of the African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat, headquartered in Accra, as a key opportunity to expand economic cooperation.

He said Ghana’s position as host of the AfCFTA Secretariat places the country in a strong position to become a production and export hub for companies seeking access to Africa’s growing market.

Technology and Economic Partnership

President Mahama expressed optimism that Ghana’s natural resources and youthful workforce, combined with South Korea’s technological expertise and innovation, will continue to drive a mutually beneficial partnership.

He said the agreements signed during the meeting would enhance economic collaboration, support sustainable development, and create opportunities for businesses and entrepreneurs in both countries.

The latest engagement underscores Ghana and South Korea’s commitment to deepening diplomatic, economic, and technological ties while advancing shared goals of sustainable growth and prosperity.
