Ghana MPs Meet Israeli Ambassador Over UNIFIL Attack That Injured Two Ghanaian Peacekeepers

Members of Ghana’s Parliamentary Committees on Foreign Affairs, Defence, and Intelligence have held discussions with Roes Gilad, Ambassador of Israel to Ghana, following a missile strike that injured two Ghanaian peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, focused on developments related to the ongoing unrest in the Middle East and its implications for international peacekeeping operations.

Concern Over Attack on UN Peacekeepers

During the engagement, the Ghanaian parliamentary delegation expressed grave concern about the recent missile strike on a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon. The attack left two Ghanaian soldiers critically injured and caused significant damage to the facility.

Lawmakers emphasized that attacks targeting United Nations peacekeeping missions violate established principles of international humanitarian law and may constitute a war crime.

They stressed that peacekeepers deployed under the United Nations mandate operate as neutral forces committed to maintaining stability and protecting civilians in conflict zones.

Call for Full Investigation

The Minority members of Parliament called for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the incident to establish the facts surrounding the attack.

According to the lawmakers, identifying and holding those responsible accountable is critical to preserving the safety and credibility of global peacekeeping operations.

They also urged authorities and international stakeholders to strengthen security arrangements around UN peacekeeping installations in Lebanon to prevent similar incidents and ensure the safety of personnel serving under United Nations mandates.

Ghana’s Reputation in Peacekeeping

Ghanaian soldiers deployed on international peacekeeping missions have long earned global respect for their discipline, professionalism, and dedication to maintaining peace in volatile regions.

Over the years, Ghana has been recognized as one of the leading contributors to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide, with troops serving in difficult and often dangerous environments.

Lawmakers highlighted that these soldiers are not combatants in ongoing conflicts but peacekeepers tasked with stabilizing fragile regions and protecting civilian populations.

Support for Ghanaian Troops Abroad

Beyond the legal and security implications of the attack, the MPs underscored the human dimension of peacekeeping missions.

They noted that every Ghanaian peacekeeper serving abroad has family members at home — parents, spouses, children, and relatives who depend on them and pray for their safe return.

“As a nation, we have a duty to stand firmly behind our troops and insist that their safety, welfare, and dignity remain paramount wherever they serve,” the lawmakers emphasized.

The MPs also commended Ghana’s peacekeepers across the globe for their courage, professionalism, and unwavering dedication to duty.

Ghana, they noted, remains proud of its troops’ contributions to international peacekeeping and will continue supporting efforts to promote global peace and stability.
