Ashanti Gold SC Disassociates from Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, Acquires Kumasi City FC as New Path to Revival

Ashanti Gold Sporting Club (Ashgold FC) has announced a major step in its quest to restore top-flight football to Obuasi, officially distancing itself from former club president Dr. Kwaku Frimpong and unveiling Kumasi City FC as its new competitive vehicle.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the club’s leadership reaffirmed its commitment to rebuilding Ashanti Gold into a strong and competitive force in Ghanaian football, while clarifying two key developments.

Disassociation from Dr. Frimpong

The club confirmed that Dr. Kwaku Frimpong, popularly known as “Champion,” remains under a ban imposed by the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Management emphasized that Dr. Frimpong will have no role in the club’s current administration or public communications until his ban is lifted and any future involvement is formally cleared with football authorities.

The statement stressed that this decision is in the “best interest of supporters and stakeholders” as the club seeks to rebuild trust and credibility.

Acquisition and Rebranding of Kumasi City FC

In a bold move to ensure Obuasi has continuous football representation, Ashgold’s management has acquired Kumasi City FC, a Division Two side, and rebranded it as Ashgold FC. According to the club, this newly acquired team will serve as an academy side and interim representative until the original Ashanti Gold Sporting Club Limited is fully reinstated by the GFA.

“All relevant documentation has been finalized and approved at the Registrar General’s Department, and forwarded to the Ghana FA for record updates,” the statement read.

Call for Unity

The club appealed to its supporters, partners, and civic leaders to back the rebranded Ashgold FC, describing it as the “official vehicle” for Obuasi’s return to competitive football.

“We urge all stakeholders to focus on the real objective — restoring Ashanti Gold Sporting Club Limited. Note there is only one ASHANTI GOLD,” the club emphasized.

With this restructuring, the people of Obuasi can look forward to seeing their cherished football heritage gradually revived, as the club works to reestablish itself on the national stage.
