The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested two men for the unlawful possession of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 ammunition following an interception at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier in the Ashanti Region.
The suspects, identified as Kwame Afram, a bus driver, and Godfred Essel, his mate, were arrested on December 26, 2025, after police officers on duty stopped a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GT 5771-18. The vehicle was travelling from Accra toward Walewale en route to Paga.
According to the police, a thorough search of the bus uncovered two concealed containers holding a total of 2,600 AK-47 rounds. A subsequent search led to the discovery of a bag hidden beneath the driver’s seat containing two bulletproof plates, a black crushed helmet, and a pair of long boots.

Both suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. The bus and all retrieved exhibits have been impounded as inquiries continue.
The police have reiterated their commitment to intensifying security checks at checkpoints and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by providing timely information to help curb the trafficking of illicit weapons and ammunition.
