NSA Demands Documentation of Nkawkaw Stadium Project After Constructive Meeting with MP Bryan Acheampong

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has formally requested all relevant documentation surrounding ongoing construction works at the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium, following what it described as a “progressive and constructive” meeting with the Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Hon. Bryan Acheampong.

In a statement issued by NSA Director General, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, the Authority emphasized that while the intentions behind the stadium’s recent development may be noble, all construction on state-owned sports facilities must comply with legal and regulatory requirements.

“As the law demands of the Director General of the NSA, I requested for documents on the construction of work at the Nkawkaw Stadium,” Mr. Ampofo Ankrah stated. “This follows guidance and counsel for the suspension of unauthorized work until all relevant documentation and approvals are submitted.”

Background of the Project

In 2020, the NSA, in collaboration with the Middle Belt Development Authority (MBA), commissioned Farahdel Ghana Ltd to undertake the modernization of the Nkawkaw Stadium into a multi-functional sports complex. However, the project stalled shortly afterward due to financial constraints.

At the beginning of 2025, Hon. Bryan Acheampong, seeking to revive the project, engaged the MBA with an offer to privately fund a scaled-down version of the stadium. This revised plan was to provide a temporary home venue for Okwahu United in time for the upcoming football season.

However, this initiative reportedly proceeded without formal engagement or approval from the NSA—the legal custodians of the stadium facility.

In May 2025, Farahdel Ghana Ltd resumed construction on a new model backed by the MP, sparking concerns and confusion following conflicting media reports.

NSA Responds with Fact-Finding Mission

In response, the NSA dispatched a high-level delegation led by its Estates Manager and Chief Operating Officer to Nkawkaw for a fact-finding mission. The team’s report, submitted on June 8, 2025, prompted the NSA to immediately engage Hon. Acheampong and recommend a suspension of ongoing works.

This was to allow for the proper submission of documentation, clarification of the project scope, and compliance with existing laws. The NSA stressed that a comprehensive report would be submitted to the Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddi Adams.

Stakeholder Briefing and Way Forward

On Monday, June 16, 2025, a stakeholders’ briefing was held at the stadium site, where details of the new project model, necessary approvals, and the responsibilities of all parties involved were outlined to community leaders, regional authorities, and the national public.

“The NSA welcomes support from stakeholders who share the vision of improving Ghana’s sports infrastructure,” said Mr. Ampofo Ankrah, “but we must uphold transparency, accountability, and proper procedures.”

The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to ensure the successful and lawful redevelopment of the Nkawkaw Sports Stadium.
