MAN JAILED 25 YEARS FOR 2022 MINING SITE ROBBERY AT MANSO AKWASISO

A 30-year-old man has been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for his involvement in a 2022 robbery at a mining site at Manso Akwasiso in the Ashanti South Region.

The convict, Dominic Ofori, popularly known as “Fanta,” was arrested on February 16, 2026, after reportedly evading arrest for several years. He pleaded guilty to robbery under Section 149 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and was subsequently handed the custodial sentence by the court.

According to police reports, on March 20, 2022, the Manso Adubia District Police received intelligence about a planned attack by a group of armed men from Manso Abodom targeting a mining site at Manso Akwasiso. The suspects were allegedly planning to rob the site owner of gold concentrate.

Acting on the tip-off, the police mounted a coordinated operation and laid an ambush at the mining site.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. that day, four armed men reportedly stormed the location and robbed the miners of gold concentrate. Police officers who were on surveillance intervened, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Three of the suspects — Abu Abubakar, Musah Latif, and Gideon Takyi — were later pronounced dead at the St Martins Catholic Hospital after sustaining gunshot wounds. Dominic Ofori managed to escape at the time but was eventually apprehended and brought before the court.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to tackling violent crime and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
