Ken Agyapong Camp Strongly Refutes Tribal Comment Accusations

The campaign team of presidential aspirant Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong has strongly dismissed a JoyNews publication suggesting that he made “tribal tirades” or urged Akans to “reject minorities.” According to the campaign, the headline and accompanying report are false, misleading, and inconsistent with both the facts and Hon. Agyapong’s long-standing public record.

In a statement signed by Campaign Spokesperson Kwasi Kwarteng, the team insisted that the remarks attributed to Hon. Agyapong were not tribal, but rather a response to what they described as unprecedented levels of tribal intimidation targeted at the campaign in some parts of Northern Ghana ahead of the party’s primaries.

The statement detailed allegations of coercion by “some chiefs and influential individuals” who were reportedly pressuring delegates to vote along tribal lines. It also cited actions by certain Members of Parliament from the North who, according to the campaign, have been appealing to tribal sentiments during their engagements.

Even more alarming, the campaign noted, are threats against supporters who have spoken out about what they believe to be electoral injustices against Hon. Agyapong in past primaries. Some supporters, they said, have faced threats of banishment, physical harm, and social exclusion in their communities simply for publicly backing the MP.

The campaign stressed that highlighting such incidents does not amount to engaging in tribal politics. Rather, they argued, Hon. Agyapong has a responsibility to speak out when his supporters are allegedly subjected to intimidation or discrimination.

While reaffirming their commitment to a clean, issues-based campaign rooted in unity and mutual respect, the team vowed not to allow injustices or tribal manipulation to go unchallenged. They also criticized what they called a growing trend of some political actors “exploiting tribal sentiments in the North only to present themselves as victims in the South.”

The campaign further emphasized Hon. Agyapong’s decades-long track record of supporting communities and employing Ghanaians across all ethnic backgrounds. They argued that no objective review of his public or private life supports claims of tribalism.

Calling on JoyNews to uphold journalistic integrity, the statement urged the media outlet to avoid “sensational reportage that undermines truth and unity.”

“Our campaign stands for fairness, consistency, and respect for all,” the spokesperson affirmed, stressing that Hon. Agyapong will continue championing these principles to promote party cohesion.
