GFZA CEO Joins President Mahama to Commission World’s Largest Calcined Clay Plant in Tema

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority (GFZA), Dr. Mary Awusi, joined President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday, March 5, 2026, to commission the world’s largest calcined clay production facility at the Tema Free Zones Enclave.

The state-of-the-art facility, developed by Continental Blue Investment (CBI) Ghana Ltd., has the capacity to produce over 400,000 tonnes of calcined clay annually, making it the largest industrial-scale flash calciner for clay globally.

The project represents a major step toward sustainable cement production in Ghana, as calcined clay can replace a significant portion of clinker in cement manufacturing. This technology is expected to reduce carbon emissions while maximizing the use of locally available raw materials.

GFZA Commends Sustainable Investment

In her solidarity message, Dr. Mary Awusi praised CBI Ghana Ltd. for its commitment to innovation and environmentally sustainable manufacturing within the Free Zones enclave.

According to her, the investment positions the Tema Free Zones Enclave as a leading hub for sustainable cement production in Africa.

Dr. Awusi also revealed that the enclave is currently fully occupied due to growing investor interest. To address increasing demand for industrial space, she disclosed that the Authority is developing a new industrial site at Afienya, which will serve as Ghana’s first plug-and-play industrial zone.

The Afienya project is expected to provide ready-built infrastructure, allowing companies to begin operations quickly and efficiently.

Boost for Ghana’s Industrial Sector

The Minister for Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, highlighted the importance of the facility to Ghana’s manufacturing and construction sectors.

She explained that the plant aligns with the government’s strategy of promoting value addition and strengthening domestic industrial capacity through the use of locally available raw materials.

Mahama Hails Landmark Industrial Investment

In his keynote address, President Mahama described the commissioning as a landmark achievement in Ghana’s industrial and infrastructure development.

He commended CBI Ghana Ltd. for investing in modern technologies that support sustainable construction and acknowledged the role of the GFZA in facilitating investment within the Free Zones enclave.

The President also reiterated government’s commitment to revitalizing the Tema Free Zones Enclave to reinforce its position as a modern export-oriented industrial hub.

Transforming Ghana’s Cement Value Chain

The calcined clay plant is expected to significantly transform Ghana’s cement production value chain. By partially replacing clinker with calcined clay, the technology can reduce the carbon footprint of cement production by up to 40 percent while maintaining quality standards.

Beyond environmental benefits, the project will promote the use of Ghana’s abundant clay resources, create employment opportunities and strengthen the country’s industrial ecosystem.

Dr. Awusi attended the event with several senior officials of the GFZA, including Deputy CEO for Finance and Administration, Mr. Hamidu Sibiri Musah; Deputy CEO for Operations, Mr. Lateef Apau Wiredu; Director of Corporate Affairs, PR and Aftercare, Dr. Patience Agbleze Acorlor; Director of Administration, Hajia Hanatu Abubakar; Director of the Tema Administrative Office, Mr. Lawrence Osi-Boateng; and Head of Estate, Zones and Application Processing, Mr. Benjamin Obeng, among other officers of the Authority.

The commissioning marks another step forward in Ghana’s drive toward sustainable industrialization and export-led growth.
