Fisherman Sentenced to One Week in Prison for Domestic Abuse Incident Captured on Video

A 29-year-old fisherman, Nii Baah Afful, has been sentenced to one week in prison by the Gender-Based Violence Court in Accra for physically assaulting his partner, Francisca Aryee. The case drew national attention after a video of the assault, which took place at Korle Gonno on March 20, 2025, went viral on social media, prompting public outrage.

According to a press release from the Ghana Police Service’s Regional Public Affairs Unit, the incident occurred during a domestic dispute, during which Afful was seen attacking Aryee while she held their 8-month-old baby. Investigations revealed that the couple lived together and had two children.

Afful was arrested on March 22, 2025, by the Accra Regional Police Intelligence Unit and arraigned before court two days later. He pleaded guilty to the charges during a court hearing on April 9, 2025, and was subsequently sentenced to one week of imprisonment with hard labour at Nsawam Maximum Security Prison.

The Greater Accra Police Command has urged the public to continue reporting all forms of domestic violence. They emphasized the importance of victims seeking help through the appropriate legal and support systems.

The police reiterated their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals and ensuring justice for victims of abuse.
