Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has expressed profound sorrow over the tragic military helicopter crash that claimed the lives of two Cabinet Ministers and six others earlier today.
In a message of condolence sent to President John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Bawumia described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and a devastating loss for the entire nation.
“The fallen men paid the ultimate price in the service of our motherland, leaving a shocked nation in pain,” he said in his statement.

The crash, which has sent ripples of grief across Ghana, claimed the lives of Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Environment Minister Dr. Alhaji Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, and six other individuals, including high-ranking public officials and members of the Ghana Armed Forces.
A Personal Loss
Dr. Bawumia revealed that he knew most of the deceased personally and expressed a deep sense of personal loss at their untimely passing.
“I know most of the deceased personally and equally feel a sense of loss to see their demise under such horrid circumstances,” he lamented.
National Mourning and Support
The former Vice President, speaking on behalf of himself, his wife Samira Bawumia, the Bawumia family, and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), joined the nation in mourning the departed souls.
“Samira, I, the Bawumia family, and the NPP join the nation in mourning them,” he noted.
He prayed for comfort and strength for the bereaved families and called on Ghanaians to unite in this time of sorrow.
“May the good Lord grant the bereaved families, the Government and people of Ghana strength and healing in this time of tragedy.”
The accident has been met with widespread mourning, with national flags flying at half-mast as ordered by President Mahama. Messages of condolence continue to pour in from political leaders, civil society, and citizens across the country.
As Ghana grapples with one of the darkest moments in recent memory, Dr. Bawumia’s message echoes the shared grief and solidarity of a mourning nation.
