Vice President Engages Roads Ministry on Infrastructure Development

The Vice President of the Republic, Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to improving the country’s road infrastructure following an official working visit to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

During the visit, the Vice President was received by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, and the leadership of the Ministry. The meeting provided an opportunity to review the current state of Ghana’s road network and strengthen coordination between the Presidency and the Ministry.

Officials from the Ministry briefed the Vice President on the status of the country’s road network, which currently spans about 137,000 kilometres. They also outlined government’s plans to expand and modernize road infrastructure across the country as part of the administration’s “Big Push” development agenda.

Among the key projects discussed was the proposed Accra–Kumasi Expressway, a major initiative expected to enhance connectivity between two of Ghana’s largest economic hubs and stimulate trade and economic activities along the corridor.

The Ministry further highlighted ongoing efforts to improve road maintenance, strengthen axle-load enforcement to protect road infrastructure, and introduce technology-driven tolling systems after Cabinet approval to reintroduce road tolls nationwide.

However, officials also pointed to several challenges affecting the sector. These include high sector indebtedness, financial constraints, project delays, limited staff capacity, vandalism of road infrastructure, and right-of-way issues that continue to impact the smooth execution of road projects.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang acknowledged the work being done by the Ministry and emphasized the importance of road development to Ghana’s national progress and economic growth.

She also appealed to the public to exercise patience as government works to address the challenges facing the sector, noting that national development requires sustained effort and collective commitment.

The Vice President further urged Ghanaian contractors to rise to the occasion by delivering quality infrastructure and supporting government’s agenda under the Big Push initiative.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by government to strengthen road infrastructure across the country while promoting safety, accountability, and long-term sustainability in the sector.
