Public sector workers in Bolgatanga react to salary increment

Some public sector workers in the Bolgatanga Municipality of the Upper East Region have expressed mixed feelings about the 10 per cent salary increment by the government. Government increased the Base Pay on the Single Spine Salary Structure (SSSS) by 10 per cent across board from January 2025 to December 2025 following successful negotiations between Labour Union and President John Dramani Mahama. The increment, which would take effect on March 1, 2025, was determined by economic conditions and cost of living. Following the announcement, the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in random interviews with some public sector workers, especially in the education and health sectors, expressed mixed feelings about the increment. Madam Sophia Agambila, an Ophthalmic Nurse, said “I expected an inc...

A clean stove will save your family

The warm aroma of simmering garden eggs stew fills the air as Akos, a mother of four, bends over her traditional cookstove, stirring the evening meal. The thick smoke rising from the burning charcoal swirls around her, stinging her eyes and making her cough. For years, this has been her reality—one that she, like many Ghanaian women, has come to accept. However, experts are warning that this daily exposure to smoke is putting her life and the lives of her family members at risk. Health professionals and researchers are also raising alarms over the impact of household air pollution caused by traditional cookstoves. Dr Louisa Ademki Matey, the Metropolitan Director of Health Services for Accra Metro, is, therefore, advocating for a transition to clean cookstoves, urging husbands to take a...

Ghana’s asset declaration laws ‘deliberately weakened’ to shield public officials – Domelevo

Former Auditor-General Daniel Yaw Domelevo has criticised Ghana’s asset declaration laws, arguing that they have been deliberately weakened to allow public officials to evade accountability. Speaking on Joy News on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, he accused lawmakers and the executive of failing to strengthen the legal framework for asset declarations, making it easy for officials to conceal ill-gotten wealth. Domelevo pointed out inconsistencies between Ghana’s Constitution and Act 550, which governs asset declarations. He said while the Constitution requires public officials to declare their assets before assuming office, the law grants them up to six months after taking office—a contradiction he believes creates loopholes for corruption. “Since 2020, nothing has been don...
