Cape Coast to Experience Planned Power Outage on January 8 for Major Substation Upgrade

Residents of Cape Coast and surrounding communities in the Central Region will experience a planned power outage on Thursday, January 8, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to improve electricity supply reliability in the area.

According to a joint statement from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and the Ghana Grid Company Ltd. (GRIDCo), the interruption in power supply will occur from 6:00am to 10:00pm. The outage is necessary to enable GRIDCo engineers to replace an existing 33MVA transformer at the Cape Coast Substation with a new, higher-capacity 66MVA transformer.

The transformer upgrade is described as a critical component of the government’s broader agenda to strengthen and expand the national power transmission infrastructure. Once completed, the new transformer is expected to significantly enhance the capacity of the Cape Coast Substation, allowing more households and businesses in Cape Coast and its environs to connect to the national grid.

Officials say the upgrade will also lead to improved power quality, reliability, and overall system stability in the Central Region.

GRIDCo engineers, working under the strict supervision of the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, have put all necessary measures in place to ensure the work is completed efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe to allow for the prompt restoration of power.

The Ministry and GRIDCo have apologised to residents and businesses for any inconvenience the planned outage may cause and reaffirmed their commitment to supporting national development through improved and reliable power delivery.

The statement was signed by Richmond Rockson, Esq., Spokesperson and Head of Communication for the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition.
