Bawumia Leads NPP Leadership Race with Over 60% Delegate Support – APL Poll Reveals

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the race to lead the New Patriotic Party (NPP) into the 2028 general elections, according to a new internal poll conducted by the Africa Policy Lens (APL).

The survey, which engaged 30,681 NPP delegates across all 16 regions, shows that 63.8% of respondents prefer Dr. Bawumia as the party’s next presidential candidate.

Trailing behind him is Hon. Kennedy Agyapong, who secured 28.9% support, placing him as the second most popular contender among the party’s delegates. Other aspirants included Dr. Bryan Acheampong with 4.6%, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum with 1.5%, and Kwabena Agyapong with 1.2%.

According to the data, Dr. Bawumia leads in 14 out of the 16 regions, with Kennedy Agyapong leading in only the Central and Western North Regions.

The poll results indicate strong momentum for Dr. Bawumia ahead of the NPP’s upcoming January 31st presidential primaries, further solidifying his position as the most likely candidate to secure the party’s nomination for the 2028 elections.

Analysts attribute his consistent popularity to his marketability, communication style, and strategic campaign approach, which have resonated with delegates across the country.

“The findings reflect the prevailing sentiment among NPP supporters and show Dr. Bawumia’s strong command within the party,” said Dr. George Domfe, President of APL and Development Economist at the University of Ghana.

The poll’s outcome is expected to influence strategic discussions and internal alignments within the NPP as the party prepares for its crucial primaries. Party leaders are also emphasizing unity and collective strength to ensure a competitive campaign for the 2028 elections.

As the NPP gears up for the internal contest, Dr. Bawumia’s commanding lead could significantly shape the party’s direction and its prospects for maintaining political power in the next general elections.
