Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has applauded the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) for five decades of unwavering dedication to promoting Ghanaian sports, describing the association’s impact as “enduring and indispensable.” She made the remarks while representing His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama at the 50th Anniversary celebration of SWAG, where she also received a special award on behalf of the President.
Addressing the gathering, the Vice President praised SWAG for consistently uplifting Ghanaian athletes through recognition and storytelling that inspire excellence across all sporting disciplines. According to her, SWAG’s work has significantly contributed to motivating sportsmen and women to uphold high standards while showcasing the depth of talent across the country.
She noted that many Ghanaian athletes rise from modest backgrounds to shine on national and continental stages, demonstrating the nation’s vast potential. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to harnessing this potential by investing in sports as a catalyst for national development.

Prof. Opoku-Agyemang highlighted the government’s drive toward a comprehensive transformation of the sports sector, emphasizing that meaningful progress demands deliberate investment, sound policies, modern infrastructure, and strengthened grassroots systems. She added that the Ministry of Sports and Recreation has realigned its priorities to modernize Ghana’s sporting facilities in line with the national reset agenda.
A solemn moment was dedicated to the victims of the recent stadium stampede, with the Vice President expressing deep sympathy for the affected young men, women, and their families. She stressed that the tragedy reinforces the urgent need for improved safety measures, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced crowd management across the country’s sporting venues.
The Vice President also congratulated all athletes, coaches, referees, administrators, and journalists who were honoured at the ceremony, celebrating their dedication and the inspiration they continue to provide to millions of Ghanaians.
She further commended SWAG for its 50 years of service to the nation, describing the association as a vital custodian of Ghana’s sporting history. “For five decades, SWAG has documented our sporting journey, advocated for our athletes, and preserved the stories that define our national identity,” she stated.
The SWAG Golden Jubilee celebration marked a significant milestone, reflecting the association’s long-standing influence and its role in shaping Ghanaian sports discourse.
