A tragic stampede occurred at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra early this morning during the Ghana Armed Forces’ (GAF) 2025/2026 recruitment exercise, resulting in the deaths of six potential recruits and leaving several others injured.
According to a statement released by the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident happened around 6:20 a.m., when a sudden surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the gates ahead of the scheduled screening. The chaos led to a fatal stampede that claimed multiple lives and caused various degrees of injuries among applicants.
The Ghana Armed Forces confirmed that the injured victims were immediately transported to the 37 Military Hospital, where they are receiving emergency medical care. Medical teams are reportedly working around the clock to stabilize the affected individuals.

In the statement, signed by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Navy, the Armed Forces expressed deep sorrow over the incident, extending heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.
“The Ghana Armed Forces deeply regrets the tragic incident and assures the general public that all necessary measures are being taken to support the affected families,” the statement read.
Authorities have initiated investigations to determine the exact cause of the breach and identify measures to prevent such occurrences in future recruitment exercises.
Arrangements are currently underway to notify the families of those who lost their lives. The Ghana Armed Forces has also pledged to release further updates as the situation develops.
This unfortunate event has cast a shadow over what was expected to be a routine nationwide recruitment exercise, drawing thousands of eager applicants hoping to serve their country.
