Residents of Kasoa Peace Town Appeal to Government to Resume Abandoned Drainage Project

Residents of Peace Town, a fast-growing community in Kasoa, are appealing to the government to resume work on an abandoned drainage system that was started in late 2024 but stalled following the recent change in government.

The drainage project, which was aimed at addressing persistent flooding in the area, was expected to improve sanitation and reduce the health risks associated with stagnant water. However, months after construction equipment left the site, uncovered trenches and partially built drains have become a major concern for residents.

According to community members, the situation has worsened during the rainy season, with floodwater overflowing into homes and streets, making movement difficult and exposing residents to diseases.

“Before the project started, flooding was already a problem, but now it’s even worse because the drains were dug and left open,” said Madam Adjoa Mensah, a trader who has lived in Peace Town for over ten years. “When it rains, water collects everywhere, and mosquitoes are increasing. We fear for our children’s health.”

Another resident, Mr. Kofi Antwi, a commercial motor rider, expressed frustration over what he described as neglect after the political transition.

“The work started with so much hope. We were told it would be completed within months,” he said. “After the change of government, the contractors just stopped coming. Now we are suffering, and nobody is saying anything.”

Residents also raised safety concerns, particularly for children and the elderly, who risk falling into the uncovered drains, especially at night.

“There have been several near accidents already,” noted Miss Efua Asare, a seamstress. “If nothing is done, it’s only a matter of time before something serious happens.”

The community is therefore calling on the Ministry of Works and Housing, as well as the Awutu Senya West Municipal Assembly, to intervene and ensure the project is continued regardless of political changes.

Residents say completing the drainage system would not only reduce flooding but also boost property values and improve overall living conditions in Peace Town.

For now, they remain hopeful that their appeal will be heard and that the abandoned project will be revived in the interest of public safety and community development.
