Works Ayawaso West-Wuogon drainage system to begin

Madam Lydia Seyeram Alhassan, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso West Wuogon has taken steps to build some drainage system at Westlands and its environs to facilitate the free flow of water. The decision, she said followed the recent downpour, which flooded homes of residents in the constituency and led to the loss of properties. Speaking to journalists on Saturday after a visit to the area said, funding had been made available to contractors to access the situation and begin work on the drainage systems to avert the recurring of floods in the area. Minister proposes submerged drainage system to minimise flooding

Mr Samual Atta Akyea, the Minister of Works and Housing, has proposed the adoption of submerged drainage system to help deal with the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into open drains to minimise flooding. He said though the submerged drainage system was capital intensive, it had been adopted by most advanced countries and Ghana needed to do same. Mr Atta Akyea said it was time for a re-engineering of the country's drainage system to ensure that the modified one to be adopted was the best to deal with the environmental challenges. He said it was essential to open up the sizes of the current drains as most of them were to too small to contain the pressures on them.
