Police bust human trafficking and cybercrime syndicate, rescue 57 Nigerian nationals

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has successfully dismantled a major human trafficking and cybercrime network, leading to the arrest of five suspects and the rescue of fifty-seven Nigerian nationals believed to have been trafficked into the country.

In a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation conducted by the CID’s Operations Unit at Adom Estates, Community 25, in the Greater Accra Region, the suspects — identified as Joel Nosa, Collins Rotimi, Shadrack Lulu, Austin Amahuaro, and John Uloko — were apprehended for their alleged involvement in the transnational criminal enterprise.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the syndicate lured unsuspecting young men and women, aged between 18 and 26, from Nigeria into Ghana under the pretense of offering them lucrative employment and educational opportunities. Upon arrival, the victims were reportedly coerced into participating in online romance scams and other forms of cybercrime.

During the operation, police recovered 77 assorted laptops, 38 mobile phones, two vehicles, three television sets, and several internet-enabled devices believed to have been used in the commission of the crimes. All exhibits have been retained for forensic analysis to aid in ongoing investigations.

The fifty-seven rescued victims are currently receiving comprehensive care and support under the supervision of relevant agencies. The suspects, meanwhile, are in police custody and assisting investigators as the CID works to unravel the full extent of the trafficking and cybercrime network.

In a statement signed by Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, Public Relations Officer of the CID, the Ghana Police Service urged the general public — particularly the youth — to exercise caution regarding unsolicited offers of employment, educational scholarships, or travel opportunities, especially those originating from social media or other unverified platforms.

“The Ghana Police Service remains resolute in its commitment to combating human trafficking, cybercrime, and all related offenses. We encourage the public to promptly report any suspicious activity or credible information on such criminal operations to the nearest police station,” the statement emphasized.

This latest operation underscores the CID’s intensified efforts to curb organized crime and protect vulnerable individuals from exploitation within and beyond Ghana’s borders.
