Old Tafo MP Petitions President Mahama Over Alleged Desecration of National Monuments by LGBTQ+ Activists

The Member of Parliament for Old Tafo Constituency, Hon. Vincent Ekow Assafuah, has formally petitioned President John Dramani Mahama over what he describes as the “desecration of Ghana’s sacred monuments” by homosexual activists.

In a strongly worded letter dated Thursday, June 26, 2025, Hon. Assafuah expressed deep concern over the circulation of photographs purportedly showing two homosexual individuals posing deliberately at iconic national heritage sites — the Independence Square and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum.

According to the MP, these historic locations symbolize Ghana’s freedom and the sacrifices of its forefathers, and should not be used to promote values he deems “alien” to the country’s cultural, moral, and religious identity. “These spaces are sacred,” he emphasized, “They are not to be turned into platforms for promoting acts that are fundamentally alien to our values.”

Describing the incident as more than a photo opportunity, the MP called it a “moral affront” and “spiritual insult” to the conscience of the nation, insisting that it is symbolic of a broader attempt to normalize homosexuality in Ghana — something he claims the majority of Ghanaians find unacceptable.

Hon. Assafuah reminded President Mahama of his public commitment to sign into law the Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill — a controversial piece of legislation currently under public and legislative scrutiny. The MP urged the President to not only reaffirm that promise but to act swiftly by pushing for urgent legislative measures.

“If Parliament and the Executive were able to pass the Dumsor Levy under a certificate of urgency,” he argued, “surely the moral defence of this country deserves the same urgency if not more.”

He further urged the President to speak out publicly, condemn the incident, and lead efforts to protect what he referred to as the spiritual and moral fabric of Ghanaian society.

Concluding the petition, Hon. Assafuah emphasized that this is not a partisan issue but a matter concerning “the soul of Ghana,” and called on the President to act decisively in defence of national values.

The petition comes amid ongoing national debate over LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana and the future of related legislation.
