NPP to Deliver ‘True State of the Nation Address’ on March 4

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced that it will deliver what it calls the “True State of the Nation Address” on Tuesday, March 4, 2025. This move follows President John Dramani Mahama’s official State of the Nation Address (SONA) on February 27, which the NPP claims misrepresented the realities of the country’s situation.

In a press release signed by the party’s National Chairman, Stephen Ayensu Ntim, the NPP criticized President Mahama’s address for failing to provide a full and accurate picture of Ghana’s current trajectory since his administration took office on January 7, 2025.

According to the statement, several alarming national challenges have emerged within weeks of President Mahama’s leadership, including worsening electricity instability, increasing security concerns, a rise in illegal mining (galamsey), and a growing unemployment crisis. The NPP argues that these pressing issues were conspicuously absent from the President’s address, which, under Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, is meant to provide a comprehensive and honest assessment of the nation’s affairs.

The party specifically pointed to:

• Deteriorating Power Supply: Increasing electricity instability, threatening businesses and livelihoods.

• Security Challenges: A noticeable decline in national security, particularly in the northern regions, leading to heightened public safety concerns.

• Illegal Mining (Galamsey) and Violence: A resurgence in illegal mining, with violent incidents in Obuasi posing environmental and security threats.

• Employment Crisis: The government’s mass cancellation of public sector recruitments and appointments, exacerbating unemployment and economic uncertainty.

The NPP stated that, in response to these issues, it will present the True State of the Nation Address, led by its parliamentary leadership under Hon. Alexander Kwamena Afenyo Markin. The address aims to provide what the party describes as a “factual and objective account” of the nation’s condition.

“We remain committed to ensuring transparency, accountability, and responsible governance,” the statement concluded.

Ghanaians now await the March 4 address, which is expected to provide a counter-narrative to President Mahama’s SONA and offer an alternative perspective on the country’s current challenges and prospects.
