The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development (MoFA), in collaboration with the Fisheries Commission, has officially announced the 2025 Closed Fishing Season for the marine fishing fleet as part of ongoing efforts to ensure the sustainability of Ghana’s marine resources.
The annual closed season, a critical component of Ghana’s fisheries management strategy, aims to replenish declining fish stocks and secure the long-term viability of the fishing industry, which supports food security, job creation, and economic development for millions of Ghanaians.
Closed Season Timelines

According to the directive:
- Industrial trawlers will observe a two-month closure from July 1 to August 31, 2025.
- Semi-industrial inshore vessels will observe a one-month closure from July 1 to July 31, 2025.
These timelines align with scientific advice and global best practices in marine resource management to allow fish populations time to breed and regenerate.
Exemption for Canoe Fishers
Artisanal marine canoe fishers are exempted from the 2025 closed season. However, this exemption does not release them from adherence to other fisheries regulations.
All canoe fishers are reminded to strictly observe the designated weekly fishing holiday—usually Tuesday—in accordance with traditional norms and under the supervision of the Fisheries Commission’s Regional Offices and the respective Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs).
Call to End Illegal Fishing
The Ministry and the Fisheries Commission also issued a strong warning against Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities, such as light fishing and the use of unauthorized gear. Fishers are urged to comply with all regulatory measures to protect marine ecosystems and preserve the sector for future generations.
The Ministry reaffirms its commitment to working with all stakeholders—including fishers, processors, traditional authorities, and development partners—to build a resilient and sustainable fisheries sector for Ghana
