President John Dramani Mahama has joined the official launch of a renewed national initiative aimed at mobilizing support for Ghana’s senior national football team ahead of the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
The initiative, marked by the unveiling of the Ghana World Cup Raffle, was spearheaded by the Ghana World Cup Fundraising Committee and formally launched at the Ministry of Finance. It forms part of a broader strategy to galvanize nationwide support and generate financial resources to boost the team’s World Cup campaign.
Addressing attendees at the event, President Mahama underscored the importance of collective national backing for the team, while also reaffirming the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.
He made it clear that public funds would not be used to sponsor travel arrangements for supporters heading to the tournament. According to the President, the cost implications are substantial, revealing that transporting and accommodating just 200 fans could amount to nearly $2 million.
Describing the logistics as “staggering,” he emphasized that while fan presence at the global tournament is valuable for morale and national pride, responsible governance requires prudent financial decisions.
President Mahama stressed that government spending must remain focused on critical priorities such as job creation and economic growth, rather than non-essential expenditures.
The Ghana World Cup Raffle is expected to serve as an alternative avenue for mobilizing financial support, enabling citizens and stakeholders to contribute toward the national team’s participation without placing additional strain on public resources.
The initiative signals a balance between promoting national unity through sports and maintaining sound economic management as Ghana prepares for the global football showcase.
