GYEM Mourns Late Environment Minister and Victims of August 6 Helicopter Crash

The Ghana Youth Environmental Movement (GYEM) has joined the nation in mourning the tragic loss of eight lives, including Honourable Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, Minister for Environment, Science and Technology, who died in a helicopter crash on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

In a statement, GYEM expressed its deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of all the victims, describing Dr. Murtala Muhammed as a passionate advocate for environmental sustainability whose commitment was evident despite his brief tenure at the ministry.

“His passion for environmental sustainability will leave an indelible legacy that will inspire collective action toward a greener, safer, and more sustainable future,” the group said.

GYEM recalled its last engagement with the late minister during preparations for the Youth Adaptation Forum in May this year, organized in partnership with the Global Centre on Adaptation. Although he could not attend in person, he sent a representative whose message reflected his depth of understanding and unwavering dedication to sustainability.

“At this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families, the Government of Ghana, and the people of our nation,” the statement added, assuring that GYEM stands in solidarity with the nation during this period of grief.

The August 6 helicopter accident has plunged the country into mourning, with tributes pouring in from across Ghana and beyond.

May the souls of the departed rest in perfect peace.
