Several Ghanaian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have been seriously injured following what has been described as a reckless strike on a UN base in southern Lebanon.
In a statement issued on March 6, Micheál Martin, the Government of Ireland strongly condemned the attack, describing it as unacceptable and dangerous for international peacekeeping operations.
“I strongly condemn the reckless strike on a UNIFIL base in southern Lebanon that has left a number of Ghanaian peacekeepers seriously injured,” Martin said.

The Irish leader emphasized that peacekeepers operate under international mandates to maintain stability and protect civilians, noting that their safety must always be guaranteed.
“The role of peacekeepers is sacrosanct, and all should go above and beyond to prevent them from coming into harm’s way,” he added.
According to the statement, Irish peacekeepers stationed in Lebanon responded quickly to assist their Ghanaian counterparts following the incident. Martin praised the actions of the Irish troops, highlighting their professionalism and bravery during the emergency.
“I would like to pay tribute to the courage, resilience, and professionalism of the Irish peacekeepers who came to the aid of their Ghanaian colleagues today,” he said.
The Irish government also confirmed that all personnel from Ireland serving with UNIFIL remain safe and fully accounted for.
UNIFIL, established in 1978, is tasked with monitoring the cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon and supporting stability in southern Lebanon. The mission includes troops from several countries, including Ghana and Ireland.
Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the circumstances surrounding the strike or the condition of the injured Ghanaian peacekeepers.
The incident has renewed concerns about the safety of peacekeeping forces operating in volatile regions as international calls grow for the protection of UN personnel carrying out peacekeeping mandates.
