Funeral For Late Ayawaso East MP Naser Toure Mahama Set for Today

A sombre mood has descended on the Ayawaso East constituency as residents, political figures, and family members gather today, Monday, January 5, to bid farewell to their Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.

The veteran lawmaker passed away on Sunday, January 4, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital after a short illness. In keeping with Islamic tradition, his burial rites are being held within 24 hours of his passing, drawing thousands of mourners to the Nima and Kanda areas.

Arrangements for the funeral were swiftly concluded following high-level coordination. The Member of Parliament for Ayawaso North, Yussif Jajah, disclosed that an intervention by President John Dramani Mahama helped clear administrative processes at the mortuary, allowing the body to be released promptly.

“As we speak now, we have brought the body home,” Mr. Jajah confirmed late Sunday evening, noting that the remains had been handed over to the family for final rites.

The funeral programme reflects the late MP’s deep ties to his constituents. Janazah prayers are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. at the Ayawaso East Constituency Office along the Kanda Highway. The prayers are expected to be led by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, underscoring the stature and respect Naser Toure Mahama commanded.

Following the prayers, a procession will move to the Madina Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest.

“God willing, tomorrow morning at 10 o’clock, prayers will be observed at the Kanda Highway where his constituency office is. His Eminence, the National Chief Imam, will lead the Janazah prayer,” Mr. Jajah stated.

Widely described as a grassroots politician, Naser Toure Mahama was known for his advocacy for urban renewal in Nima and his strong commitment to youth empowerment within Zongo communities.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Command is expected to deploy officers to manage traffic along the Kanda Highway and surrounding roads leading to the Nima–Mamobi enclave. Motorists have been advised to use alternative routes until mid-afternoon.

Across Nima, constituents continue to pay tribute to the late MP, describing him as a bridge-builder who remained humble and accessible despite his political stature. His passing leaves a notable gap in the Minority caucus in Parliament and a profound sense of loss among the inner-city communities he faithfully represented.
