ORAL committee to present report to President Mahama next week    

President John Dramani Mahama has indicated that the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) committee will present its report to him in the coming week.    Upon receipt, he would forward the report to the relevant investigative bodies for further investigations and appropriate actions against identified culprits.    The ORAL committee has been set up by the President to investigate alleged acts of corruption and misappropriation by past government officials.    Speaking at a durbar in Cape Coast to crown his thank-you tour of the Central Region, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to rooting out corruption in government, stressing that that “a very strict” system of accountability would be instituted.    He said the government woul...

Ghanaian Soldier Gets 70 Months In Prison For Smuggling Firearms

A Ghanaian soldier serving in the United States (U.S.) Army, Major Kojo Owusu Dartey, has been sentenced to 70 months in prison for smuggling firearms from the United States to Ghana. Additionally, he will serve three years of supervised release. Major Dartey, a member of the U.S. Special Forces, was convicted of multiple offenses, including making false statements, conspiracy, dealing in firearms without a license, and illegally exporting firearms without a license. He was also found guilty of lying about having sexual relations with one of his witnesses in the case. Two pals jailed 16 months for stealing

Two friends, who stole gold bearing stones valued GH¢15,000 from a grinding machine shop in Kaniankor Top, a suburb of Nsuaem, have been sentenced to a total of 16 months' imprisonment in hard labour by the Tarkwa District Court One. Ibrahim Asante and his accomplice, Kwame Ntiamoah, both galamsey operators, would each serve eight months imprisonment. They pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit crime and stealing. Haruna Orders 25% Cut In UG Residential Fees

Haruna Iddrisu The minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has urged the University of Ghana (UG), to reduce accommodation costs by 25% for both fresh and continuing students. He said this during a meeting on February 6, 2025, with the University’s management. “I have asked the Vice Chancellor to reduce the residential facility fees by 25 percent and I have subsequently asked her to engage you (SRC) in the future on any fee announcement,” he explained. Two managers of Bridge Micro Credit have been put before court for confiscating 955 pieces of women’s dresses from a customer’s shop for defaulting in loan payment. Gideon Yeboah, 39, Recovery Manager, and Godfred Bright Eku, 50, General Manager, appearing before an Accra circuit court, pleaded not guilty to conspiracy to commit crime, unlawful entry and stealing women dresses totaling GHC513,000. The court, presided over by Christina Cann, has admitted the accused persons to bail in the sum of GHC513,000 with three sureties each. Two of the sureties should be justified. The matter has been adjourned to February 24, 2025. ActionAid donates 479 dual desks to some basic schools in UWR 

Six basic schools in the Jirapa, Sissala East, and Lambussie Districts in the Upper West Region have received 479 dual desks from ActionAid Ghana to help augment the furniture situation in these schools.  The intervention, which would also contribute to improved learning outcomes, is expected to benefit 960 children in the three districts.   The beneficiary schools are: Nindor-Wala Basic School and Ul-Kpong Junior High School (JHS) in the Jirapa Municipality; Suke Primary School and Piina JHS in the Lambussie District and Chalu "A" and "B" Basic Schools in the Sissala East Municipality.   The intervention was through ActionAid Ghana (AAG’s) regular giving income with resources mobilised from philanthropic child sponsors from the United Kingdom and Greece. ...

A District Court “B” in Sunyani, has imposed restrictions on the movements of Ignatius Baffour-Awuah, the former Minister of Employment and Labour Relations and Member of Parliament (MP) for Sunyani West Constituency. Kuntunse murder case adjourned to February 20 

The case of Constable Smith Gyekyi, the policeman accused of shooting a man at Kuntunse over alleged transport fare dispute, has been adjourned to February 20.  At a district court at Kotobabi in Accra, prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Apewa Achana, told the court that they were still awaiting the Attorney General’s advice on the matter after forwarding a duplicate to the said office.  Chief Inspector Achana, therefore, prayed for a date.  Meanwhile the Ghana News Agency has gathered that Constable Gyekyi, last year, obtained a GHC 200,000 bail from a high court in Accra.  She is being held for the murder of one Stanley Ahadzi.  The court has preserved his plea.  On Sunday, August 18, 2024, at about 0400 hours, the police received information t...
