UK restricts DR Congo visas over migrant return policy

The UK is to impose visa restrictions against people arriving from the Democratic Republic of Congo after its government failed to agree to measures allowing the return of illegal migrants and foreign national offenders. Ministers say the DRC has not made changes required under the toughening up of the UK’s asylum rules announced in November. Meanwhile, the Home Office said Angola and Namibia had agreed to step up efforts to take back their citizens, having been threatened with sanctions alongside the DRC. A government source said Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood would not hesitate to ban visas for other countries refusing to take citizens back. The Home Office said Angola and Namibia agreeing to improve their processes marked the “first delivery success from last month’s asylum ...

‘Back to the drawing board’ for Nigeria after World Cup qualifying failure

Nigeria fans are coming to terms with the fact the three-time continental champions will miss successive World Cups after a disjointed qualifying campaign which included two changes of manager and players boycotting training. A squad boasting talents such as Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Alex Iwobi could not clinch one of the 48 places at the expanded 2026 finals after being beaten on penalties by DR Congo in Africa's play-off final on Sunday night. It was at the 1994 finals in the United States that Nigeria exploded on to the global football scene by reaching the last 16 on their World Cup debut, before winning gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. But the fifth-ranked side in Africa will not be able to add to that list of achievements when the United States hosts th...

Ebola outbreak kills 15 in DR Congo

At least 15 people have died in a new outbreak of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the country's health ministry has said. The presence of the virus had been confirmed in a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was admitted to hospital last month after showing symptoms that included a high fever and repeated vomiting, the ministry added.  She died a few hours later from multiple organ failure. This will be the 16th outbreak of the deadly virus in the vast central African state that has poor health services, and is hit by conflict in the east. The latest outbreak is in central Kasai province, with 28 suspected cases recorded, the ministry said.  Officials have urged strict adherence to preventive measures, including frequent handwashing and social distancing in...
