Ghanaian dancehall musician Shatta Wale, known in private life as Charles Nii Armah Mensah, has expressed gratitude to the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), after engaging students of the university in a motivational speaking session.
Shatta Wale said the engagement went beyond a speaking event, describing it as a meeting of minds that gave him an opportunity to share lessons from his personal and professional journey.
In a message following the engagement, the musician thanked the Vice-Chancellor of UPSA, Professor John Kwaku Mensah Mawutor, as well as the leadership, faculty, staff and students for welcoming him to the university.
He said he used the opportunity to speak about the journey behind the Shatta Wale brand, including the failures, lessons, ideas, discipline and reinvention that had shaped his career.
According to Shatta Wale, the session also allowed him to connect with students who listened to his experiences, asked questions and interacted with his message.
He urged the students not to focus on copying his lifestyle but to learn from the way he approached challenges and opportunities.
“Don’t copy my lifestyle. Copy my thinking,” he said.
Shatta Wale stressed the importance of developing the mind, describing it as an individual’s greatest asset.
He encouraged the students to protect and train their minds while constantly seeking knowledge and remaining confident in their ideas.
He also urged them not to be afraid of thinking differently, particularly as young people preparing to enter the world of work and business.
“Your greatest asset is YOUR MIND,” he stated.
The musician said his interaction with the students had also inspired him.
He explained that although he went to UPSA to share his experiences and ideas, he left the university encouraged by the thoughts and reactions of the students.
“I came to share my mind, but I left inspired by yours,” he said.
The engagement formed part of Shatta Wale’s wider interactions with young people, where he has often spoken about his experiences in the Ghanaian music industry, entrepreneurship, creativity and personal development.
His message at UPSA focused on the importance of mindset, discipline, knowledge and the ability to reinvent oneself in the face of setbacks.
Shatta Wale has built a major profile in Ghana’s music industry through his dancehall career and has remained one of the country’s most recognisable entertainment personalities.
The UPSA engagement also generated interest among students, with the musician acknowledging their participation and describing the experience as meaningful.

He described the experience with the words “The Mind”, emphasising his central message that young people could strengthen their future by developing the way they think.
