Matthew Opoku Prempeh reflects on nine years of Free SHS as placement concerns persist
Former Education Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has marked nine years since the implementation of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, saying the policy removed a major financial barrier to secondary education but also created new challenges that required continuous improvement.
Dr Opoku Prempeh, who served as Minister of Education during the implementation of the Free SHS policy, said the programme had moved Ghana’s education system from “promise to implementation” and opened access to secondary education for many families.
In a statement marking the anniversary, he said he had the privilege of leading the implementation process together with teachers, public servants and education professionals across the country.
