Former Education Minister Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has marked nine years since the implementation of Ghana’s Free Senior High School (Free SHS) programme, saying the policy removed a major financial barrier to secondary education but also created new challenges that required continuous improvement. NPP Demands School Places for 54,985 BECE Candidates

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called on the government to urgently find school places for 54,985 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates who were not initially placed in senior high schools. The party also called for immediate support for 183,233 senior high school graduates who, according to the NPP, failed to obtain a credit pass in Core Mathematics in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). By Ghana News Express Member of Parliament for Okaikwei Central, Patrick Yaw Boamah, has inspected final works on two new 12-unit classroom blocks at Apenkwa Shiayennoh and Abeka Cluster of Schools ahead of their formal handover to the Municipal Assembly and the Municipal Education Directorate. The inspection formed part of efforts to ensure that the facilities were completed to the required standard before they were handed over for use by pupils and teachers. Education Ministry moves to amend law to restore faith-based representation on GES Council

The Ministry of Education has announced plans to initiate the necessary legislative process to amend the Pre-Tertiary Education Act, 2020 (Act 1049), to ensure adequate representation of recognised faith-based organisations on the Ghana Education Service (GES) Council. The move followed concerns raised by the Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference over its exclusion from the current GES Council. GES Clarifies Salary Adjustments for Newly Promoted Teachers

Newly promoted teachers across the country have been advised not to submit application letters or other documents to have their salaries adjusted to reflect their new ranks. The Ghana Education Service (GES) Management has clarified that teachers who are promoted to new ranks are normally placed automatically on the appropriate salary scale corresponding to their new positions. The clarification follows concerns raised by some newly promoted teachers who said they had been directed in some regions and districts to submit application letters, promotion letters and other documents for the processing of their salary adjustments. According to the notice released on March 9, 2026, the affected individuals include Roland Botwe Nsiah (Student No. 21079431), Bernard Boadi (Student No. 21161358), John Kelvin Kane (Student No. 21125897), Felix Acquah (Student No. 21090747), and Francis Tutu Atuahene (Student No. 20782684).
