Police Arrest 77 Suspects in Anti-Drug Operation in Tamale and Savelugu

The Ghana Police Service has arrested seventy-seven (77) suspects in a major anti-drug operation carried out in the Tamale Metropolis and the Savelugu Municipality.

The operation, led by the Northern Regional Police Command’s Special Operations Team, popularly known as Red Maria, took place on Monday, March 23, 2026, at about 9:30 p.m. A total of thirty-three (33) police personnel were deployed for the exercise, which forms part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on drug peddling and related criminal activities in the region.

According to the Police, the team first targeted known drug hotspots in Lamashegu, a suburb of Tamale, where one suspect was arrested. The operation then moved to the Aboabo market area, where another individual was apprehended with a powdered substance suspected to be cocaine.

Further intelligence led officers to NOBISCO, where an alleged supplier was arrested. However, a search conducted at his residence did not yield any incriminating items.

The operation intensified when the team extended its activities to Savelugu, where a major raid was conducted at a known drug peddling enclave. This resulted in the arrest of an additional seventy-four (74) suspects.

Police retrieved several exhibits during the operation, including seven motorbikes, one Toyota Camry vehicle, quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, and ten sachets of Tramadol.

All suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Authorities say they are undergoing screening, and those found culpable will be arraigned before the courts.

The Northern Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to combating drug-related offences and maintaining public safety. It also urged the public to support law enforcement efforts by providing timely and credible information to help fight crime
