Vice President Calls for Stronger EU-Ghana Security Partnership Amid Regional Tensions

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its strategic partnership with the European Union to promote peace and stability across the sub-region.

Speaking on recent security developments, the Vice President acknowledged the EU’s continued support to Ghana through key initiatives such as the European Peace Facility and the EU Security and Defence Initiative. These programs have collectively supported more than 30 security-related projects in Ghana, covering areas including conflict prevention, counterterrorism, border management, maritime security, and cybersecurity.

She noted that the collaboration has significantly strengthened Ghana’s security architecture and contributed to broader regional stability.

However, Vice President Opoku-Agyemang stressed that recent incidents in the sub-region, particularly the tragic killing of Ghanaian traders in Burkina Faso, highlight the urgent need for intensified cooperation among international partners.

She emphasized that peace remains the cornerstone of sustainable development, underscoring the importance of proactive and coordinated efforts to address emerging security threats.

“The safety of our citizens and the stability of our region must remain a top priority,” she indicated, adding that strengthening partnerships like that between Ghana and the European Union is essential to securing a peaceful and prosperous future.

The Vice President concluded by reiterating Ghana’s commitment to working closely with international allies to ensure long-term peace, security, and development in West Africa.
