‘We’ll upgrade TVET Centres to bridge gender gap,” Minister assures

Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, has assured Ghanaians that Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) centres across the country will be made more practical under improved learning conditions to enhance employability of students.

In a speech during his verification visit to the Koforidua Technical Institute and St. Paul Technical Institute, both in the Eastern Region, Mr. Iddrisu said the Ministry was committed to aligning theoretical teaching with hands-on training to better equip learners for the job market.

He noted that such reforms were necessary to bridge the wide enrolment gap between male and female students, as over 55,000 candidates were sitting for the 2025 Certificate II Examinations under the TVET system – comprising 40,339 males and 14,956 females.

Mr. Iddrisu described the gender imbalance as indicative of the lesser impact theoretical learning has on female students and stressed the need for workshops and practical tools to expose them to real-world skills and improve their competitiveness.

He urged students to stay calm, focused, and to conduct themselves with integrity during the exams, describing integrity as “the best way through which one can comport himself or herself to succeed in every situation.”

The exams are being held in two phases: core subjects from June 30 to July 7, and elective subjects from July 14 to 28.

Meanwhile, Mr. Suleman Zakaria, Director-General of the Commission for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (CTVET), has reminded candidates and supervisors to report to their respective exam centres on Friday, July 4, 2025.
