Trader Arrested in Sabon Zongo for Possession of Dangerous Drugs and Unlicensed Firearm

A 30-year-old trader, Amidu Mohammed, has been arrested and charged by the Greater Accra Regional Police Command for the possession of dangerous drugs and an unlicensed firearm in Sabon Zongo, a suburb of Accra.

According to police reports, the arrest followed intelligence gathered by the Accra Regional Intelligence Team, which identified Mohammed, a shop operator, as being involved in the possession and distribution of suspected restricted drugs.

During an initial engagement with police, the suspect admitted to having quantities of the drugs in his possession and also confessed to having sold some to an individual in the area.

A police team was immediately dispatched to the location, where Mohammed was identified and taken into custody. A subsequent search of his premises revealed a significant stash of restricted and prescription-only drugs, including Tramico 225, Tramaking 225, Tafrodol 225—popularly known locally as “RED” or “Wo Nim Red?”—as well as Diazepam 10, often referred to on the streets as “Blue-Blue” or “Valium 10.”

In addition to the drugs, police discovered a pump-action firearm, which was concealed in a sack inside the suspect’s shop. While the suspect admitted ownership of the drugs, he claimed the firearm was not his and alleged that it had been left there by an unknown individual. However, he failed to provide any further information or identify the alleged owner of the weapon.

Amidu Mohammed has since been arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court, where he is facing charges including:

  • Possession of Dangerous Drugs, contrary to Section 38 of the Pharmacy Act, 1994 (Act 489)

Further investigations are ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s operations and whether other individuals may be involved.

Police have urged members of the public to continue assisting law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities in their communities, as part of broader efforts to combat drug trafficking and illegal firearm possession in the region.
