Shatta Wale Freed from EOCO Custody After Bail Terms Revised

Dancehall icon Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has been released from the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) after spending nearly two days in detention.

His release follows a revision of the initial bail conditions, which had drawn significant public attention. Shatta Wale’s manager, Samuel Atuobi Baah, also known as Sammy Flex, confirmed to JoyNews that the original bail sum of GH¢10 million was reduced to GH¢5 million, with two sureties to be justified.

In addition to the new terms, the musician is required to report to EOCO three times a week while investigations continue.

The case stems from Shatta Wale’s alleged purchase of a 2019 Lamborghini Urus, a luxury vehicle that U.S. authorities say is tied to proceeds of a US$4 million financial crime. The scheme was masterminded by Ghanaian national Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving a prison sentence in the United States. The Lamborghini was seized earlier this year by EOCO in collaboration with the FBI and the U.S. Department of Justice.

During interrogation, EOCO noted that the artiste was unable to identify the seller of the vehicle, claiming instead that he bought it “from the street.” He also failed to provide proper ownership documents, presenting only a customs declaration form in the name of the convicted fraudster.

Shatta Wale’s detention and release have sparked widespread debate about celebrity accountability and the origins of wealth in Ghana’s entertainment industry. His loyal fan base, the “Shatta Movement,” camped outside EOCO headquarters throughout his detention, chanting and showing solidarity with the star.

The case has also highlighted the growing cooperation between Ghanaian and U.S. law enforcement agencies in the fight against transnational financial crimes.
