President Mahama Calls for Withdrawal of Bill Seeking to Repeal Office of Special Prosecutor Act

President John Dramani Mahama has formally requested the Majority Leader and the Majority Chief Whip in Parliament to withdraw a Private Member’s Bill that seeks to repeal the Act establishing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).

The request follows the President’s recent public statement reaffirming his support for strengthening the OSP as a critical institution in Ghana’s fight against corruption. He made these remarks during a meeting with the National Peace Council on Tuesday, where he underscored the importance of robust anti-corruption mechanisms to safeguard public resources and enhance good governance.

According to the President, the Office of the Special Prosecutor remains a vital cog in the national anti-corruption architecture and should be reinforced rather than dismantled. He emphasized that repealing the law establishing the OSP would undermine ongoing efforts to promote accountability and transparency in public life.

While reiterating his commitment to the OSP, President Mahama also urged the Office to intensify its work to build greater public confidence. He called on the Special Prosecutor to confront corruption decisively and operate in line with the objectives that informed the creation of the Office.

The announcement was conveyed in a statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Member of Parliament, Spokesperson to the President, and Minister for Government Communications.

The development is expected to influence parliamentary deliberations on the Private Member’s Bill and renew national discussions on the role and effectiveness of the Office of the Special Prosecutor in Ghana’s democratic governance system.
