Ghana Lodges Protest to UN After Attack on Ghanaian Peacekeepers in Lebanon

The Government of Ghana has formally lodged a protest with the United Nations following an attack on Ghanaian peacekeeping troops serving in Southern Lebanon under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which left two soldiers seriously injured.

The protest, submitted on March 6, 2026, was communicated by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, on behalf of the Government of Ghana to the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ghanaian Battalion serving with United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under attack on March 6, 2026, during operations in Southern Lebanon. Two Ghanaian soldiers sustained serious injuries in the incident.

In its communication to the United Nations, the Government of Ghana strongly condemned the attack and demanded a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The government further called on the United Nations to ensure that those responsible for the attack are identified and held accountable, describing the assault as a grave violation of international law and an act that amounts to a war crime against United Nations peacekeeping personnel.

Ghana also urged the United Nations to take urgent steps to enhance the safety and security of members of the Ghanaian contingent deployed under the UNIFIL mission, as well as other peacekeepers serving under the operation.

In its statement, the government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Ghanaian soldiers serving abroad and assured the injured personnel of its full support.

“The Government of Ghana assures our gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice and guaranteeing enhanced protection,” the statement said, adding that the nation’s thoughts and prayers are with the injured soldiers and their families.

Ghana also reiterated its long-standing commitment to United Nations peacekeeping missions around the world, emphasizing that the safety and protection of peacekeeping personnel must remain paramount in global efforts to maintain international peace and security.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs indicated that it will continue to closely monitor developments and remain engaged with relevant United Nations authorities as investigations into the attack proceed.
