President John Dramani Mahama has joined the University of Ghana and the nation in celebrating NASA astronaut Christina Koch following her historic selection as a crew member of the Artemis II mission.
In a statement, President Mahama described Koch’s achievement as a moment of immense national pride, highlighting her unique connection to Ghana. Koch, who will be the only woman on the pioneering lunar mission, previously studied as an exchange student at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year.
During her time at Legon, Koch immersed herself in Ghanaian culture and academics, studying courses such as the History of Ghana, African History, Rural Sociology, Music, and even Twi for Beginners. According to the President, this experience helped shape her global outlook and strengthened her connection to the country.

A particularly emotional moment for many Ghanaians was Koch’s symbolic gesture of hoisting the Ghanaian flag in space—an act widely seen as a tribute to the country that once hosted her academic journey.
President Mahama emphasized that Koch’s rise from the lecture halls of Legon to the frontiers of space exploration serves as a powerful inspiration to young people across Ghana and Africa. He noted that her story demonstrates the global impact of Ghana’s educational institutions and their role in nurturing individuals who go on to achieve extraordinary feats.
The President also extended his best wishes to Koch and her fellow crew members as they undertake the Artemis II mission, expressing hope that their journey will continue to inspire future generations to pursue ambitious dreams.
“Her journey reminds us that no height is insurmountable,” the statement noted, reinforcing a message of resilience, ambition, and global possibility.
The Artemis II mission, part of NASA’s broader lunar exploration program, is expected to carry astronauts around the Moon, marking a significant step toward future human missions to the lunar surface.
