Western Regional Police Investigate Fatal Shooting at Mining Site in Adelekezu

The Western Regional Police Command has launched a full-scale investigation into a fatal shooting incident that occurred at a mining company site at Adelekezu, near Dadwen in the Axim District, resulting in the death of a young boy and the destruction of company property.

According to a police statement signed by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit, Superintendent of Police Ms. Olivia E. T. Adiku, the incident occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025. Police officers who responded to the scene found extensive damage to the mining company’s assets, including two burnt 4×4 SUV vehicles, two tipper trucks, and additional damage to a pickup truck and a Toyota Land Cruiser, allegedly caused by agitated youth from the community.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the incident followed a misunderstanding between some youth of Adelekezu and private security personnel employed by the mining company. The youth reportedly attempted to invade the company’s concession and, in the process, tried to seize a pump-action gun from one of the security guards. The guard resisted and discharged the weapon, striking a boy.

The injured boy was rushed to the Axim Government Hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police say the death triggered anger among the youth of the town, leading to a violent rampage at the mining site. Several company properties were set ablaze, and workers were threatened with mob action.

The police team was able to rescue eleven workers from the site and arrested five suspects in connection with the incident. The suspects have been identified as Gyenyame Owusu, aged 38; Matthew Asamah, 24; Kojo Agyei, 21; and two juveniles, Nana Yaw, 15, and Yaw Opoku, 16. They are being held for causing harm and unlawful damage.

The Western Regional Police Command has appealed to residents of Adelekezu and surrounding communities to remain calm and cooperate fully with ongoing investigations to ensure justice is served.

Investigations are continuing.
