UN Mourns Ghana Airforce Helicopter Tragedy, Pays Tribute to Fallen Ministers

The United Nations family in Ghana has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic crash of a Ghana Airforce Z-9 helicopter, which claimed the lives of several high-ranking government officials, including the Honourable Minister for Defence, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, and the Honourable Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed.

In a solemn statement, the UN Resident Coordinator in Ghana, Zia Choudhury, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, the Government, and the people of Ghana, describing the incident as a “national wound” and a tragedy that resonates beyond the borders of Ghana.

“The United Nations family in Ghana mourns with the nation in this moment of deep grief,” the statement read. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and to the Government and people of Ghana, as we together face this painful loss.”

The crash, which occurred during a routine security operation, has sent shockwaves across the country and the international community. Tributes continue to pour in for the departed ministers, both of whom were regarded as dedicated public servants who made significant contributions to Ghana’s development and security.

“This tragedy is not only a national wound but also a loss felt across the international community,” Choudhury emphasized, adding that the UN stands in solidarity with Ghana during this difficult time.

The United Nations reaffirmed its commitment to continue working closely with Ghana in the spirit of partnership and peace, while honouring the memory of the deceased officials.

“We honour the memory of all those who have passed, with hope for their lasting peace,” the statement concluded.

As the nation observes a period of mourning, flags have been ordered to fly at half-mast, and a state memorial service is expected to be held in the coming days to commemorate the lives and service of the fallen leaders.
