Health Ministry Reports Major Milestones in Healthcare Delivery Ahead of 2026 Budget Implementation
The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has highlighted significant progress in the country’s healthcare sector during the Government Accountability Series today.
Minister Akandoh revealed that the #MahamaCares initiative is now fully operational, with a GHS 2.259 billion allocation for 2026 dedicated to covering non-communicable diseases such as cancers, renal conditions, cardiovascular illnesses, and other chronic disorders.
He further announced that NHIS coverage has grown from 18 million to 20 million members in just one year, now reaching 60% of Ghana’s population. To improve healthcare access and restore provider confidence, NHIS tariffs will increase by 120%, which is expected to reduce out-of-pocket payments for patients.
