The Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has highlighted significant progress in the country’s healthcare sector during the Government Accountability Series today.
Minister Akandoh revealed that the #MahamaCares initiative is now fully operational, with a GHS 2.259 billion allocation for 2026 dedicated to covering non-communicable diseases such as cancers, renal conditions, cardiovascular illnesses, and other chronic disorders.
He further announced that NHIS coverage has grown from 18 million to 20 million members in just one year, now reaching 60% of Ghana’s population. To improve healthcare access and restore provider confidence, NHIS tariffs will increase by 120%, which is expected to reduce out-of-pocket payments for patients.

The Minister also unveiled that the 2026 health sector budget stands at GHS 34.22 billion, marking the highest allocation in recent years. The budget includes provisions for the nationwide rollout of the Free Primary Healthcare program, set to begin next year.
In a bid to improve healthcare infrastructure, the government will commence the construction of new regional hospitals in Savannah, Oti, and Western North regions. These developments are part of the broader effort to transform healthcare access and delivery across the country.
Minister Akandoh emphasized that these measures reflect the government’s commitment to ensuring equitable, quality, and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.
