Sam George Rejects DStv’s Proposal, Demands Price Reduction for Ghanaians

Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, Hon. Samuel Nartey George, has strongly criticized MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DStv, for what he describes as blatant disregard for the plight of Ghanaian consumers amid recent price hikes for their satellite television services.

In a statement released on Monday, Sam George declared that DStv Ghana’s response to public uproar over its recent 15% price increase only confirms his long-standing concerns — that the company does not take the Ghanaian people seriously.

Drawing a comparison with Nigeria, the lawmaker noted that MultiChoice Nigeria was compelled to reverse similar price increases after legal action by Nigerian authorities and intervention by the House of Representatives. “They complied in Nigeria, but have chosen to ignore Ghanaian concerns, even when economic indicators in April were in Ghana’s favor,” he stated.

Highlighting the irony of DStv’s actions, Sam George recalled that the cedi had appreciated by roughly 10% against major foreign currencies, inflation had dropped by over 5%, and fuel prices had declined — yet DStv went ahead to impose the hike.

The MP further revealed that the company had made an “alternate proposal” to him, which he categorically rejected. According to him, DStv suggested that while the high prices remain, the funds collected locally should not be remitted to their headquarters abroad. He described this offer as “illogical” and “divorced from the real issue,” which is about ensuring Ghanaians pay a fair price for services received.

“For far too long, corporations have fleeced the Ghanaian people. There has been a RESET, and it demands a new style of public service that is fiercely protective of the Ghanaian people,” he emphasized.

While acknowledging the concerns of Ghanaian staff working with DStv, Sam George called on them to support the public’s demand for fair pricing. He reiterated his willingness to engage with MultiChoice Ghana, but only if the discussions are centered on reducing prices.

“Anything else is tangential and of no consequence,” he added.

The MP ended his statement with a passionate declaration: “For God and Country.”

The issue continues to attract public attention as many consumers join the call for regulatory intervention and more affordable access to digital TV services in Ghana.
