Police foil Armed Robbery Attack on Kumasi-Bibiani highway

A swift and courageous response by the Nkawie Divisional Police Patrol Team on Monday evening, June 2, 2025, prevented what could have been a deadly armed robbery incident along the Kumasi-Bibiani highway.

The attempted robbery occurred at approximately 7:30 p.m. between Ahwerewa and Esaase, where five armed men ambushed two Sprinter buses, halting the vehicles at gunpoint with the intent to rob passengers. One of the assailants was reported to be wielding a pump-action gun.

According to a statement from the Ashanti Regional Police Command, the patrol team arrived at the scene just in time to disrupt the attack. Upon spotting the police, the armed suspect opened fire on the officers. In an immediate and professional response, the police returned fire, fatally wounding the gunman. The suspect was later confirmed dead at the Afari Government Hospital.

The remaining four suspects managed to escape and are currently on the run. Authorities suspect the fugitives may have sustained gunshot wounds during the exchange and are appealing to all medical facilities and practitioners to report any individuals presenting with gunshot injuries to the nearest police station.

The deceased suspect’s body has been deposited at the Afari Government Hospital morgue for preservation and further investigations.

Commending the Nkawie Patrol Team for their bravery, the Ashanti Regional Police Command praised the officers for their professionalism and quick response, which potentially saved the lives of many passengers.

The Police are urging members of the public to continue cooperating with security agencies by providing timely and accurate information to help combat crime and ensure public safety.
