Police arrest eight Foreigners for Illegal Gold Exploration and Trading in Bono Region

The Bono Regional Police Command has arrested eight foreign nationals for engaging in illegal gold exploration and purchasing without a licence at Wewe, a community near Banda in the Bono Region.

The suspects, identified as Sayuba Ziba, Kienu Dobou, Osman Tunabu, Nana Alhassan, Wadrago Abdulai, Aliu Sali, Ibrahim Wulba, and Alhassan Imoro, are nationals of Nigeria, Ivory Coast, and The Gambia.

According to the Police, the arrests were made on Thursday, October 2, 2025, after sustained intelligence and surveillance on the group’s activities. The suspects were apprehended while actively engaged in illegal mining and gold trading operations within the community.

During the operation, the Police retrieved GH¢23,450.00 in cash, quantities of raw gold and gold dust, mercury, and a lighter used in gold processing. The exhibits have been retained for forensic examination.

“All eight suspects are currently in Police custody assisting with investigations,” the Bono Regional Police Command said in a statement signed by Chief Inspector Thomas Akeelah, the Regional Public Relations Officer.

The Command further indicated that preparations are underway to arraign the suspects before court and reaffirmed its commitment to clamp down on illegal mining and unlicensed gold trading in the region.

The Police have also urged members of the public to volunteer information that can help authorities identify and apprehend individuals engaged in illegal mining activities.
