Seventeen individuals have been apprehended in a coordinated anti-galamsey operation by the Special Police Anti-Galamsey Taskforce from the National Police Headquarters. The operation, carried out on May 25, 2025, targeted illegal mining activities in Samreboi, located in the Western Region of Ghana.
The suspects include seven Chinese nationals and ten Ghanaian citizens who were allegedly involved in unauthorized mining operations. According to police sources, all suspects were swiftly transported to Accra on the same day to aid in ongoing investigations.
This operation is part of a broader national initiative to combat illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey”, which has caused significant environmental degradation across several parts of Ghana. The police taskforce has intensified its presence in the region, with current operations extending into the Aowin Tano and Tano Anwia areas near Enchi.

Authorities are focusing on identifying more individuals connected to illegal mining and enhancing efforts to safeguard the surrounding forest reserves that are under threat due to the activities of illegal miners.
The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its unwavering commitment to supporting government initiatives aimed at eliminating illegal mining and restoring the nation’s natural resources.
