The Eastern Regional Police Command has arraigned thirty-four (34) suspects, including six (6) traditional leaders, in connection with the violent disturbances that occurred at Ahwerase in the Eastern Region during a ritual to lift the ban on noise-making ahead of the annual Odwira Festival.
The unfortunate incident resulted in the death of one individual, identified as Isaac Nana Kwasi, and left three others injured. The injured persons are currently receiving medical treatment at the Aburi Presbyterian Hospital (KOM), while the body of the deceased has been deposited for preservation and autopsy.
According to a statement from the Police, the suspects have been charged with rioting with offensive weapons and causing unlawful harm. Investigations revealed that the disturbances erupted during traditional festivities, leading to the use of firearms and other offensive weapons.

Police investigations have so far led to the retrieval of two (2) weapons, four (4) live cartridges, and four (4) spent pump-action cartridges. The retrieved weapons have been identified as:
- Umarex Pistol No. MP160407589
- Cyborg Magnum Force Pump Action No. 602-H25YT-516
The statement further indicated that calm has since been restored to the area. Police personnel have been deployed to maintain order and ensure the safety of residents and visitors throughout the Odwira Festival period.
“The Police will continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep the public informed as investigations progress,” the statement assured.
The Ghana Police Service also reiterated its commitment to maintaining law and order before, during, and after the Odwira Festival, urging the public to remain peaceful and cooperate with security authorities to ensure a safe and successful celebration.
