NDC Firmly Rejects Any Move to Amend Presidential Term Limits

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has categorically denied any intention to pursue a constitutional amendment that would allow former President John Dramani Mahama to contest for a third presidential term.

In a statement issued by the National Chairman of the party, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the NDC said it had taken note of recent public discussions arising from remarks attributed to the Majority Leader in Parliament, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, regarding the possibility of amending the 1992 Constitution to alter presidential term limits.

The party leadership stressed that it has no intention, now or in the future, of directing its Parliamentary Majority to initiate or support any amendment aimed at extending or changing the constitutionally mandated two-term limit for presidents.

According to the statement, the NDC’s position on the issue is firm and longstanding. The party reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to the two-term presidential limit, describing it as a foundational pillar of Ghana’s democratic system since the adoption of the 1992 Constitution.

The statement recalled that the NDC was instrumental in the creation and promotion of the 1992 Constitution and that it was under the party’s leadership that the presidential term limit was deliberately capped at two. This decision, the party explained, was made to safeguard national stability, prevent the abuse of executive power, and preserve the integrity of Ghana’s governance framework.

Warning against any attempt to tamper with this constitutional provision, the NDC described a third-term amendment as dangerous, noting that it could introduce unnecessary political tension, threaten stability, and undermine the peace Ghana has enjoyed throughout the Fourth Republic.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the NDC will not sponsor, support, entertain, or tolerate any move to amend the presidential term limits for any individual, including H.E. John Dramani Mahama,” the statement emphasized.

The party also underscored that former President Mahama has consistently demonstrated respect for the Constitution and Ghana’s democratic traditions. It urged the public to disregard rumours suggesting that he or the NDC is seeking to alter term limits for personal or political gain.

Instead, the NDC said its priorities remain focused on governance reforms, economic recovery, national unity, and the strengthening of democratic institutions.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the party’s commitment to defending the 1992 Constitution in the interest of Ghana’s continued peace, stability, and democratic progress.
