President John Dramani Mahama has returned to Ghana to a heroic welcome following his high-profile leadership at the United Nations General Assembly, where he championed a landmark resolution recognising the Transatlantic Slave Trade as the gravest crime against humanity.
Touching down in Accra on Monday, the President was met with cheers and applause from government officials, traditional authorities, and scores of enthusiastic citizens who gathered to celebrate what many are calling a defining moment in Africa’s pursuit of justice.
Speaking upon arrival, President Mahama described the development as a powerful testament to the impact of unity and shared purpose among African nations and the global African diaspora. He emphasized that the recognition of the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the international level marks a significant step toward reparative justice.

“This moment reminds us of what we can achieve when we stand together with clarity of purpose,” he stated. “It is a proud milestone not only for Ghana, but for Africa and people of African descent around the world.”
The reception at the airport was led by Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, alongside senior government officials and dignitaries. The Vice President praised President Mahama for his leadership in advancing Africa’s position on reparations, noting that his efforts had successfully guided the motion to adoption at the UN.
She commended his unwavering commitment to justice and described the achievement as a major diplomatic victory for the continent.
President Mahama, who currently serves as the African Union’s Champion for Reparations, has been at the forefront of calls for global acknowledgment of historical injustices and meaningful redress for their enduring impacts.
The successful passage of the resolution is widely seen as reinforcing Ghana’s role as a moral voice on the global stage and a leader in advocating for historical accountability and equity.
The jubilant reception underscores growing public support for the reparations agenda and highlights the significance of Ghana’s diplomatic engagement in shaping global conversations on justice and human rights.
